Coach Josh
Coach Josh has been climbing for over 5 years all around the globe and moved to Australia at the start of 2022. He began this journey in Canada, where he worked as a YMCA outdoor educator, sleeping in a tipi surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. Josh facilitated all kinds of sessions including overnight hikes, night science, and canoeing, but discovered that high ropes and climbing was his passion.
Josh is now an experienced boulderer and lead climber, and is always interested in learning something new! He has recently started volunteering with Sport Climbing Victoria and you will find him as a judge for the Victoria State Lead Titles in March. Outside the climbing gym he keeps his body in tip top shape with yoga and callisthenics, and enjoys practising his Australian accent – always room for improvement!
Coach Dylan
Coach Dylan has been climbing over 4 years, with his first introduction to the sport being the quartzite cliffs of Mt Arapiles. After taking up bouldering to train for outdoor rock climbing, Dylan discovered the world of competitive sport climbing, eventually leading him to represent Australia at the World Youth Climbing Championships and the 2023 Oceanic Olympic Qualifier event. Passionate about the mental aspects of the sport, Dylan advocates for approaching climbing with confidence and self belief. He sees every climbing session as an opportunity for personal improvement, emphasizing the importance of focusing on individual progress rather than comparing one’s journey to others.
Coach Harry
Coach Harry has been bouldering for over 3 years in both Europe and Australia, from indoor climbing gyms to the Peak District in the UK, and he moved to Australia last year. His career as an outdoor educator began at an English Summer Camp in Paltini , Romania in 2019, where he worked as an instructor for several camp activities. Some of these sessions included climbing, hikes, trips to adventure parks and local cities, archery, slacklining, obstacle courses, treasure hunts, swimming, games, and sports, as well as English and Business lessons. Since then, he has worked as a Teacher in both the UK and Australia, and often surprises many of the Youth Squad members by turning up as a Casual Relief Teacher (CRT) at their school.
Harry has always been an outdoor enthusiast, loving all things camping, hiking, mountain biking, snowsports and watersports, but in recent years he has discovered that his true passion is climbing. His philosophy for both Teaching and Coaching is that fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment/ community where all achievements are celebrated, however big or small, provides the opportunity for all to develop and improve their knowledge and skills.
Benefits of Squad
1. Physical development: Bouldering promotes the development of strength, coordination, balance, and agility in children as they navigate climbing routes and problem-solving challenges.
2. Confidence building: Successfully completing climbing routes and overcoming challenges can boost children’s self-confidence and self-esteem.
3. Problem-solving skills: Bouldering routes require children to analyze problems and figure out the best way to navigate them, enhancing their problem-solving abilities.
4. Focus and concentration: Climbing requires focus and concentration, helping children develop these important cognitive skills.
5. Social interaction: Bouldering in a squad setting provides opportunities for children to interact with peers, collaborate, and support each other, fostering social skills and friendships.
6. Physical activity and fitness: Bouldering provides a fun and engaging form of exercise for children, promoting overall physical health and fitness.
7. Risk management: Bouldering teaches children how to assess risks, make safe decisions, and follow safety protocols, which can be valuable skills for various aspects of life.
All in a fun, safe and inclusive environment
